Background

A regional hospital system was considering building a new emergency room (ER) facility in a growing suburban community. The hospital system had existing facilities in a nearby city and a network of urgent care and physician clinics. To inform its decision on this potential expansion, the hospital system commissioned market research to understand emergency care usage and the key factors that influence residents' choice of an ER. The research aimed to identify local healthcare needs and gauge the potential for a new facility in the area.

Execution

This was a quantitative research project conducted through an online survey. The study targeted residents in the specific communities surrounding the proposed location. The survey explored where residents typically seek emergency care, the reasons behind their choices, ER patient satisfaction with existing services and their willingness to consider a new ER. 300 people completed the survey.

By The Numbers

48% Were “likely to consider a new ER in the area”

Results

The study revealed a clear demand for an alternative emergency care option in the target community, driven by a desire for convenience and dissatisfaction with the dominant existing provider. Hospital leadership used the results to understand patient preferences and demand for services and inform strategic direction.
